Patient involvement in medical research
Medical research continuously improves diagnostic and treatment options. Using easy-to-understand texts, images and animations, this course series explains how medical research works and provides the knowledge needed to understand how research projects are planned and carried out. It also explains how patients can get involved and help shape research themselves.
New research findings are most valuable when they address the real needs and expectations of the patients concerned. This works best when patients themselves or people close to them can contribute to the planning and design of new research projects.
The content of this online course is based on the training course “EUPATI Switzerland Patient Expert” and was developed jointly by the Department of Clinical Research (DKF) of the University of Basel and EUPATI Switzerland.
Course modules
The course consists of 6 modules. Basic modules A and B provide fundamental knowledge about medical research; advanced modules 1–4 show in which areas of medical research patients or their representatives can actively participate.
Basic module A: Fundamentals of research involving humans
Basic module B: Ethical and legal aspects with a focus on Switzerland
Advanced module 1: Research priorities and study methodology
Advanced module 2: Implementing ethical and legal requirements
Advanced module 3: Informing and communicating
Advanced module 4: Translating new findings into practice

Anyone interested in medical research. No prior knowledge required.

Course fees
The course is free of charge.
After working through the course modules, participants can take a knowledge test to check their learning progress and receive a personal certificate. An administrative fee of CHF 100 is charged for this.
Extended course
The course modules described above are also part of the course “Patient involvement in medical research: EUPATI Switzerland Patient Expert training course”. In that course, participants attend a course day after each module, where the content and topics are explored in more depth and practised in class.
Taking the extended course is optional. It is intended for people who would like to engage more deeply with patient involvement in medical research and help shape research at expert level.
